United Struggle Against Porto, While Arsenal Battle on in Spain
The Champions League always offers thrilling ties, and we witnessed another tonight as underdogs Porto battled for a point against current Champions of Europe, Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Many people had written off Porto before the game, suggesting that they didn’t have the required quality to fend off United sufficiently. However, that all changed just four minutes into the game when Rodriguez slotted the ball past Van Der Sar. Rooney was quick to capitalize on error though made by the Porto defense, before setting up Tevez late in the game to finish off. But, just when everyone thought it was over Mariano Gonzalez scored at the death. It concluded 1-1, and is set up to be a feisty second leg in Portugal.
In the second quarter final of the evening, Villareal took on an ambitious Arsenal side. Spanish Euro 2008 winner, Marcos Senna, gave the hosts the lead early on with a sensational long shot that beat Almunia. The home team certainly had all the momentum coming into half time, and looked good value for their lead. Nonetheless, Arsenal came out in the second half refreshed and eager for a result. They got their reward in the 66th minute when the Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas set up Adebayor to finish with an outstanding overhead kick. Arsenal have the advantage going into the second leg, however it is certainly all to play for.
A great night of Champions League football, and there’s even more to come on Wednesday when Liverpool take on Chelsea at Anfield and the impressive Bayern Munich face up to Barcelona.
