Football Transfers – August 2009
We start this week’s transfer round-up with Arsenal defender Kolo Toure moving to Manchester City in a deal worth £16million. The Ivory Coast international has signed a four-year deal at Eastlands. Real Madrid are close to sealing a £30million deal for Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso. The Spanish international has handed in a transfer request at Anfield this week and looks set to seal the move this week.
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is chasing Roma midfielder Albert Aquilani as a replacement for the 27 year-old. The Italian side are believed to value the 25 year-old at £20million. Liverpool are also being linked with Hull centre-back Michael Turner and boss Phil Brown has revealed that the former Charlton trainee could leave for the right price. Middlesbrough have completed the free transfer of Leroy Lita. The former Reading striker has joined Boro on a three-year contract.
Middlesbrough’s neighbours Newcastle have sold Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins to German champions Wolfsburg for £9million. Stuttgart have signed Russian striker Pavel Pogrebnyak for an undisclosed fee. The Russian international has been joined at Gottlieb-Daimler Stadion by Barcelona midfielder Alexander Hleb, who arrives on a season-long loan.
Parma have completed the signing of Roma defender Christian Panucci, the 36 year-old joins on a free transfer. Parma have also completed the season-long loan deal for Manchester City striker Valeri Bojinov. The Bulgarian has fallen down the pecking order at Eastlands with the big money arrival of Emmanuel Adebayor and Carlos Tevez.
Swedish youngster Rasmus Elm is attracting the interest of Premier League clubs Everton, Fulham and Manchester City. Everton are the favourites to sign the talented midfielder, after the Kalmar star made a visit to Everton’s training ground.
