The Top End in Italy, Spain and England
With only a few games left now in Italy, Spain and England, important matches are being played every weekend. Although, in Spain and Italy there doesn’t seem to be much of a title race with Barcelona and Inter Milan dominating La Liga and Serie A respectively, it isn’t the same case in England where Liverpool are closing the gap on title rivals, Manchester United.
Inter Milan have dominated the first tier of Italian football once again. Jose Mourinho has had a fantastic start to his Inter career, and although the Champions League won’t be coming their way this season, the reigning Italian champions are currently seven points ahead of second placed AC Milan, which should be enough for yet another league title.
Josep Guardiola’s team are sitting comfortably on top of La Liga at present, and with their fancy playing style and recent win over Real Madrid it is all but certain that they will be victorious over Real Madrid this season. With their star players, like Messi and Xavi having one of their best seasons of their career thus far, it is unsurprising to see the position that they are in. With a Champions League final to look forward to, Barcelona should have enough momentum to carry on and confirm their league title.
The English Premier League is the only league out of the three main European ones where the point differences between first and second are similar. Currently, Liverpool are on top of the league by goal difference and share 80 points with Manchester United, however Alex Ferguson will be confident of victories against Manchester City and Wigan, which will see them surpass the point tally of Liverpool and put them back into first position in the league. There is certainly a rather exciting end to the Premier League season, but it’ll be quite some surprise if Manchester United don’t end up as Champions for the third consecutive season.
