The Chasing Pack Pick Up Results
As we enter the final quarter of the season, mid-week games for Premiership teams become all the more apparent, whether it is in the FA Cup, Champions League or the league. Tuesday evening saw the chasing pack to Manchester United all pick up results in Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.
Liverpool faced stern opposition in Sunderland. After losing to Middlesbrough at the weekend, the simple requirement of three points was a necessity. Despite going in at half time 0-0, Liverpool came out on top with a 2-0 win thanks to goals from N’gog and Champions League hero Benayoun. This keeps Liverpool in the title race and Benitez’s men will hope they sustain the level of performance shown tonight on a more regular basis.
Arsenal had one of their easier fixtures of the season, away to defensively weak West Brom. They came away victorious with a 3-1 win. Arsenal continue to push for a Champions League place, and the much improved attacking performance from the likes of Arshavin and Bendtner will have impressed Wenger.
Chelsea endured a tricky trip away to Portsmouth at Fratton Park, courtesy of a late Didier Drogba goal that ensured all three points for United’s main rivals. David James and Petr Cech were the outstanding players in the game, both performing heroics in either net. Hiddink continues his one hundred percent win record, and will hope Chelsea continue their outstanding form under him.
Manchester United are to play on Wednesday night away to Newcastle, where they hope to extend their lead over Chelsea from four, to seven points.
