Portugal make the play-offs
Portugal clinched a World Cup play-off berth ahead of Sweden with a 4-0 victory over Malta. Nani opened the scoring in style in the 16th minute with an effort which found the top corner of the net. Atletico Madrid winger Simao made it two just before half-time.
Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso made it 3-0 in the 52nd minute. The fourth goal was scored in the dying minutes by Arnaldo Edinho. Portugal are likely to head into the play-offs as a seeded team.
Switzerland confirmed their place at next year’s World Cup with a 0-0 draw against Israel. The Swiss finished just one point ahead of Greece, who beat Luxembourg 2-1. The Greeks took the lead in the 30th minute through Vasilis Torosidis and striker Theofanis Gekas made two just three minutes later. The visitors got a goal back late on through an own goal from Avraam Papadopoulos. The Greeks will go into the play-offs with the prospect of facing a European giant due to them not being seeded.
Slovakia will be appearing at their first ever World Cup after winning 1-0 in Poland. The only goal of the game came in the third minute through an own goal from Seweryn Gancarczyk. Slovenia took second place in the group with a 3-0 victory over San Marino.
Goals from Milivoje Novakovic, Dalibor Stevanovic and an own goal from Fabio Vitaiolo were enough to clinch a play-off berth. The Slovenians will now face a difficult tie against a seeded side in the all-important play-offs.
