Manchester United Crowned Champions of the World
Manchester United arrived in Japan last week with just one thought on their mind, winning the Fifa Club World Cup. They qualified for the event after successfully winning the European Champions League last season, overcoming Chelsea in that thrilling penalty shootout in Moscow. They were automatically selected for the semi-finals, with their first tie against Japanese side Gamba Osaka.
Manchester United approached their first game with confidence as very aimed to claim their place in the final. Ferguson fielded many of United’s top players, including the likes of Ronaldo, Giggs and Tevez. In the first half, Manchester United looked comfortable on the ball and kept attacking Osaka’s goal, without much from the Japanese side in reply. The opener for the Red Devils came in the 28th minute, with Vidic converting a header from a well delivered cross. Ronaldo, show boating as per usual, then added a second with another header to make it 2-0 to Manchester United. They were coasting to victory.
However, in the second half, the game changed as United put their foot off top gear. Yamazaki got a 74th minute goal to the delight of their supporters and they thought they were back in with a chance. But, Manchester United’s superiority shined through once again, with a four-minute goalscoring brace by substitutes Rooney, scoring two and Darren Fletcher with just the one. Osaka finished strongly though with Endo converting from the penalty spot and Hasimoto scoring at the end. 5-3 the final score and United were into the final.
The final was against Ecuadorian side, Liga de Quito on Sunday 21 December. Manchester United fielded a strong team yet again, demonstrating their respect for the trophy. The first half was all one way traffic as United pressed, however, failed to score past Quito’s goalkeeper Jose Cevallos who put in a sensational performance in goal. The second half started much like the first, as United continued to dominate, but this time found their way past Cevallos, thanks to a magnificent Wayne Rooney goal. United were Crowned Champions of the World to the delight of their supporters back in England and all over the world.
