Liverpool win derby as Chelsea beat Arsenal

Liverpool won the big Merseyside derby 2-0 against Everton at Goodison Park. In truth the Reds were outplayed for most of the game and got a lucky break in the 12th minute. Argentinean international Javier Mascherano’s weak shot was going wide before Everton defender Joseph Yobo stuck out a foot to divert it past Tim Howard.

Russian midfielder Diniyar Bilyaletdinov missed a fantastic chance for Everton before half time. Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina produced a fantastic double save to keep Liverpool ahead. Firstly he denied Tim Cahill and then Marouane Fellaini from the rebound.

Everton were made to pay for those misses in the 80th minute as Albert Riera’s effort was parried by Tim Howard and Dirk Kuyt scored from a few yards out. The score-line was harsh on the home side who dominated for the majority of the match but the visitors took their chances and left with maximum points.

Chelsea won the London derby against Arsenal 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium. The game was a tightly contested affair until the 41st minute as Chelsea striker Didier Drogba volleyed past Manuel Almunia in the Arsenal goal. On the stroke of half time Chelsea added a second as Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen put the ball into his own net.

The Gunners never really looked like coming back in the second half and Didier Drogba scored his second in the 86th minute through a fantastic free-kick from 25 yards out. The victory moved Chelsea five points above their nearest rivals Manchester United at the top of the Premier League.
