Italy could qualify for World Cup this weekend
World champions Italy could qualify for next year’s World Cup with a victory or a draw away to the Republic of Ireland. The Azzurri are currently four points ahead of the Irish in group eight. The Irish still have a small chance of automatic qualification but they would have to defeat the World Champions and win their last group as well as Italian losing their final game. The Irish are in a good position to make the play-offs as they are currently on 16 points.
Serbia could secure qualification for next year’s tournament with a victory over Romania. France are struggling in second place of group seven four points behind the Serbians. France are struggling to qualify for the World Cup automatically but should secure a play-off berth with games against the Faroe Islands and Austria to come.
With England already qualified from group six that leaves Croatia and Ukraine to battle it out for second spot and a possible play-off position. Ukraine are currently two points behind the Croats with a game in hand. Whowever Ukraine’s next game in qualifying is against group leaders England and they could find it difficult. Whoever does finish second is likely to clinch one of those play-off berths with Croatia currently sitting on 17 points and Ukraine on 15 points.
Group four is possibly the most exciting group with Germany and Russia fighting it out for first and second spot. The Germans have 22 points and the Russians are just one point behind them. This weekend sees what could be the deciding game of the group as Germany visit the Luzhniki stadium. The team whom finish second will get a play-off spot and will probably be seeded in the play-off draw.
