FIFA Player of the Year 2008

In addition to receiving the Ballon d’Or in December, Cristiano Ronaldo was also named FIFA’s World player of the year for 2008. The Manchester United forward scored 42 goals to lift his team to last season’s European Champions League and English Premier League titles.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the first Premier League player to claim the FIFA accolade since soccer’s governing body introduced it in 1991.

The 23-year-old topped a poll of national team coaches and captains, with Argentina forward Lionel Messi coming second. Liverpool’s Spanish striker Fernando Torres was third, ahead of last year’s Brazilian winner, Kaka of AC Milan. Messi’s Barcelona teammate Xavi of Spain was fifth.
