Chelsea go five points clear at the top of the Premier League
Chelsea are now five points clear at the top of the Premier League after defeating champions Manchester United 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. The game was a lively affair but the breakthrough didn’t come until the 76th minute. The Blues took the lead through a header from defender and captain John Terry from a Frank Lampard free-kick. United couldn’t find an equaliser and the Blues claimed all three vital points.
Tottenham kept up their challenge for a Champions League place with a flattering 2-0 victory over Sunderland at White Hart Lane. Despite Sunderland having the best of the game it was the home side who took the lead through a Robbie Keane tap-in on 12 minutes.
Sunderland had the chance to get back into the game early in the second half after Darren Bent was brought down in the penalty box by Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes. The striker took the penalty himself but was denied superbly by the Brazilian. Tottenham secured the maximum points in the 68th minute as Tom Huddlestone smashed home a superb effort. The home side are now fourth in the Premier League.
Another Champions League contender Aston Villa hammered Bolton 5-1 at Villa Park. Ashley Young opened the scoring in the fifth minute for the home side. Gabriel Agbonlahor doubled Villa’s lead in the 43rd minute slotting home from 12 yards.
Johan Elmander got a goal back for the visitors from close range just before the break. John Carew made it 3-1 in the 53rd minute with a superb individual effort. James Milner made it 4-1 after his penalty had been saved and the rebound had hit the post. Villa defender Carlos Cuellar headed home the fifth to give the score-line a convincing look.
