Chelsea go back to the top of the Premier League
Chelsea went back to the top of the Premier League table with a 5-0 mauling of Blackburn at Stamford Bridge. The first goal came via an own goal from Blackburn defender Gael Givet. Frank Lampard doubled their lead with typically placed finish just after half-time.
Michael Essien made it three with a long range effort which Paul Robinson will be disappointed to have conceded. Lampard scored his second from the penalty area to make it four. Didier Drogba headed home the fifth goal to give the score an emphatic look.
Liverpool halted their run of defeats with a 2-0 victory over champions Manchester United at Anfield. Liverpool were without captain Steven Gerrard but it was the Reds who took the lead through Fernando Torres in the 65th minute. The Spaniard outpacing Rio Ferdinand and firing past United keeper Edwin van der Sar.
United lost defender Nemanja Vidic in the 89th minute as the Serbia received a second booking for bringing down Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt in the centre circle. Liverpool were also reduced to ten men in injury time as Javier Mascherano slide into Edwin van der Sar and received his second yellow card.
With United searching for a second goal Liverpool hit them on the break David N’Gog scoring past the United keeper when put through one on one. The victory puts the home side four points behind the champions and puts them back into the title race. It was a bad weekend for the Red Devils as Chelsea replaced them at the top of the league.
