Chelsea and United draw and qualified for knockout stages
English champions Manchester United have qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 3-3 draw against CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford. Youngster Alan Dzagoev smashed the visitors into the lead on 25 minutes. United were level through Michael Owen four minutes later. Milos Krasic restored CSKA’s lead just two minutes later. Two minutes in to the second half the visitors went further ahead through a header from defender Vasili Berezutsky.
Paul Scholes reduced the arrears for United in the 84th minute with a header from a Gary Neville cross. United levelled the scores in stoppage-time as winger Antonio Valencia’s effort deflected past Igor Akinfeev in the CSKA goal. United have reached the knockout stages with two games remaining.
Chelsea also qualified for the knockout after a 2-2 draw with Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon. Sergio Aguero volleyed home a brilliant effort to give the Spanish side the lead in the 66th minute.
Didier Drogba equalised for the Premier League side in the 82nd minute before firing the Blues into the lead with just two minutes remaining. However it was Aguero who had the last say in stoppage-time as he fired home a superb free-kick. The draw eliminates the La Liga side from the competition.
Barcelona continued their struggles in the Champions League after drawing 0-0 at Russian champions Rubin Kazan. The Russian side had the better chances and put in a solid defensive display to keep the reigning champions out. Barca’s qualification for the knockout stages is now in doubt.
