Liverpool suffered a 2-0 defeat at Serie A side Fiorentina. Montenegrin playmaker Stevan Jovetic was the hero as he scored a first half brace. Fiorentina are now 2nd in Group E and Liverpool are 3rd in the group.
Arsenal had a better night though as they defeated Olympiakos 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners had lots of chances in the first half but were denied by the veteran keeper Antonios Nikopolidis, who put in a fantastic performance.
There were no real shocks in the third round of the English Carling Cup this week. Manchester United defeated Wolves 1-0 at Old Trafford despite having Brazilian full-back Fabio sent-off in the first half. United’s goal came from young striker Danny Welbeck. Chelsea scraped past London rivals QPR 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. The Blues took the lead through striker Salomon Kalou after good play from England midfielder Joe Cole.
All the big four won this weekend in the Premier League Liverpool defeated West Ham 3-2, Arsenal hammered Wigan 4-0, Chelsea took Tottenham apart 3-0 and Manchester United managed a dramatic 4-3 victory over Manchester City.
Arsenal demolished Wigan 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium. Thomas Vermaelen put the Gunners 2-0 up with a bullet header then a superb curling effort from 18 yards out. Emmanuel Eboue then deflected Eduardo’s shot past Chris Kirkland in the Wigan goal for 3-0. Captain Cesc Fabregas added a fourth from close range late on to complete the scoring.
The Nike Academy players just stepped-up to their toughest test yet a competitive match against Brighton & Hove Albions Academy team.
All of their specialist training would now be put into action. Could they gel as a team?
