British mixed fortunes in Champions League
Liverpool suffered a 2-0 defeat at Serie A side Fiorentina. Montenegrin playmaker Stevan Jovetic was the hero as he scored a first half brace. Fiorentina are now 2nd in Group E and Liverpool are 3rd in the group.
Arsenal had a better night though as they defeated Olympiakos 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners had lots of chances in the first half but were denied by the veteran keeper Antonios Nikopolidis, who put in a fantastic performance.
The Gunners had to wait till the 78th minute for the breakthrough, Robin Van Persie finally beating the visitor’s keeper. Six minutes later Andrey Arshavin doubled the lead, despite looking like he was in an offside position. The Gunners are now top Group H. The Greek side are second in the group despite this defeat.
Rangers suffered a miserable night as they were hammered 4-1 at Ibrox by Sevilla. The Spanish side took control of the game in the 50th minute with Abdoulay Konko opening the scoring. 14 minutes later the La Liga outfit were two goals up thanks to an Adriano strike.
Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano made it three in the 72nd minute. It got even worse for the Gers two minutes later as Frederic Kanoute made it four. Spanish striker Nacho Novo scored a consolation goal for the home side late on but the game was already lost.
Manchester United came back from a goal down to win 2-1 against German champions Wolfsburg at Old Trafford. The first half was a lively affair but produced no goals. The Germans took the lead through an Edin Dzeko header ten minutes into the second half.
The lead didn’t last long as Ryan Giggs deflected home a free-kick. Midfielder Michael Carrick secured the victory for United with 12 minutes remaining. United are top of group B with the Germans second.
Chelsea scraped a 1-0 victory away at Apoel Nicosia. French striker Nicolas Anelka scored the only goal of the game in the 18th minute. Chelsea are top of group D. The Cypriot champions are third in the group above Spanish side Atletico Madrid.
