Benzema Set For Galactico Status
Karim Benzema looks set to become the fourth signing of Real Madrid’s starlit summer, after a deal was agreed with French football club Olympic Lyonnais. The 21 year old had been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United but now looks set to join Cristiano Ronaldo in the Spanish capital.
Benzema will cost Madrid around £30million, which takes their spending over the last month to an astronomical £178million, following the transfers of Kaka, Ronaldo and Raul Albiol.
Returning president Florentino Perez turned his attention to Benzema after Valencia went back on their decision to sell David Villa. In years gone by Madrid may have continued their pursuit of Villa throughout the summer, however Perez’s’ tactic seems to revolve around quick, trouble-free deals and Lyon were only too happy to oblige when Madrid’s millions came calling.
A statement on the Lyon website said: “A few days ago Karim Benzema informed the club president Jean Michel Aulas of his desire to move to the Madrid club, which had always been his favourite club after Lyon, earlier than he had forseen.
“The player wanted to seize the opportunity which Real Madrid offered him to be one of the major elements in their new ambitious project based around the greatest players in the world.
“Lyon accepted Karim Benzema’s decision and negotiated the conditions of a transfer which satisfies all the different parties.”
The news will come as a further blow to Manchester United, who now appear to have missed out on their top transfer target just a few days after Cristiano Ronaldo completed his world record move to the Spanish football giants.
With Florentino Perez busy assembling a new and improved set of ‘Galacticos’, it may not be United’s last disappointment of the season.
